Photo du Jour: The Greek Sun-Bathing Dog

Early mornings on Santorini, Greece belong to the village canines.

Out of their villas’ twisted iron gates they trot, in search of the perfect whitewashed surface on which to soak up the sunshine.

We met this fluffy fellow in the village of Imerovigli, nonchalantly sunbathing on the wall of the Agios Nikolas Monastery.

I must confess that I was a tad envious that he gets to on Santorini year round…

This is an excellent photo – simple, interesting lines and shapes, few intense colors, cute dog! And the story that goes with makes me smile.

Thank you, Marilyn. I think you’ve pinpointed one reason why Santorini is so beautiful. It does largely have simple buildings, with crisp lines, and a blend of intense colors that complement each other.

It’s fun to think that the dog probably went and sunned himself again today. Lucky little guy.

“How much is that doggy in the window? The one with the waggly tail.” Once again staggeringly beautiful photographs Tricia. I love the way you capture skies. It sets the mood and the rest is lovely icing on a travel cake. V.

Glad you enjoyed today’s fuzzy friend posting, Virginia, and thank you for your comment.

Santorini’s skies are like a magical, blue canvas. The lighting on the island has an equally-special quality about it that makes photographing such a delight!

Beautiful photos, Tricia! Looks like one glorious day in Santorini.

Thanks, Gracie. That’s why that dog is so lucky to live there – almost every day we were in Santorini, we had sunny skies. :) The island is known for some pretty harsh winds, though, which we experienced for a few days.

I, too, love those simple lines framing that doggie….

Annette, simple lines abound on Santorini. The streamlined architecture really lets one focus on the natural beauty of the island.

We thought so too, and wondered where in the village he calls home.

The whites and blues and that golden little doggie makes for a lovely shot. He’s doing what we wish we could be doing.

Lynne, certainly you’re enjoying the Florida sunshine though? :)

I LOVE this photo. I’ve always wanted to visit Santorini, Greece. This place is simply amazing.

Thank you, Kay! Around seemingly every corner, there are whimsical details in Santorini. When you go, be sure to explore in the early-morning hours. We crossed paths with this little guy in Imerovigli, a village doesn’t that attract the cruise ship tourists as much as neighboring Fira.
