Photo du Jour: Georges the French Bulldog – Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux

Georges, a regal French Bulldog, stands guard at a wine shop in the village of Saint-Émilion, France, in the heart of Bourdeaux wine country.

We recently met Georges, who spends his days sunbathing and greeting wine tasters at his master’s shop. A firetruck-red likeness of Georges sits in the entry way, but laid-back Georges garners most of the attention of the passersby.

Where in the World?

About the author

Hi! My name is Tricia Mitchell. I delight in telling stories about my slow travels through more than 65 countries. Some of my highlights have included sharing meals with locals in Armenia, Cambodia, and Tunisia; sipping sparkling wine with French cousins in Alsace; milking goats in a sleepy Bulgarian village; and training with a Japanese mine-clearance team in Laos. My husband, Shawn, and I are based in France’s Loire Valley.

We found Georges irresistible too (not to forget Bordeaux’s wine as well – more on that to come). :-) Hope you’ve been having a splendid weekend, Gerard!

The composition of this shot is like a travel postcard!

A fun compliment, Kat – many thanks! :) I snapped this as we were leaving this French village. We couldn’t stop laughing as Georges continued to watch our every move, even as the car turned the corner. Undoubtedly, this charming canine brings in a lot of business into his master’s wine shop!

Beautiful shot. My daughter-in-law takes great animal pictures, too. I’m so envious. I don’t know what I do wrong, but my pictures never turn out so well.

Thanks, Juliann. I was lucky to capture this one through the window in the back seat of our rental car. We’d mingled with Georges for the past two days, and were actually leaving his neighborhood, and he had this somewhat sad look on his face. My husband jokes that I project feelings on dogs, so perhaps I’m reading more into his expression. :)

Hard not to like George. Bet he has a great nose for wine.

Ron, what a great line with which to start the day. :) And in Bordeaux, there is no shortage of fine wine! Lucky George…

I just love him (the french bulldog…) still a wish for my future retiring life (now with six cats around, isn’t a good idea…) Hope you’re well Tricia, a big hug :-) claudine

Hi Claudine, very nice to hear from you. So, once you retire, is it that you can play ringleader with the 6 cats and a canine addition? :) My husband also has a love for French Bulldogs, and we’ve noticed quite a fun in various spots in Europe. Hope you and your family are enjoying the summer!

I’m guessing that behind that stern face lies a big softie. He looks like he takes his door guarding job very seriously.

A softie indeed, Carol! We interpreted this look as one of sadness since we had just bid farewell, and were driving away. Perhaps we were hoping we’d brightened his days as much as he had ours. :)

Love this shot…one of my favorite breeds!

Hi Randall, my husband also lights up when he sees French Bulldogs. From France, to Germany, Croatia, and Serbia, I’ve been surprised to see how popular they are right now. The ones we’ve mingled with have had laid-back personalities. Are you seeing any on the streets of China?

      1. Dalo 2013 Avatar

Are seeing quite a few of the smaller dogs (poodles, chihuahuas, etc.) and in HK some retrievers ~ but no bulldogs yet. :-)

Perhaps yours will be the first. :)

That is a great idea :-)
