About the author

Hi! My name is Tricia Mitchell. I delight in telling stories about my slow travels through more than 65 countries. Some of my highlights have included sharing meals with locals in Armenia, Cambodia, and Tunisia; sipping sparkling wine with French cousins in Alsace; milking goats in a sleepy Bulgarian village; and training with a Japanese mine-clearance team in Laos. My husband, Shawn, and I are based in France’s Loire Valley.

Thank you, Laura! Yes, this had been one of my favorite spots in Heidelberg long before Shawn proposed… When the sun made its rare appearance on it not long after we met, he said he knew it would be the eventual spot where he’d propose. :)

Even though I’m very happy on our grand Southeast Asian adventure, I do at times long for my former home in Heidelberg. This scenic spot and Old World bench are tucked away on the grounds of the Heidelberg Castle. Before I met my husband, I used to walk up to the castle grounds as part of my workout routine. Later, Shawn and I did the 314-stair ascent together. The surrounding garden was supposedly one of Goethe’s favorite places when he visited Heidelberg in the early 1800s.

Tricia! HI! So how long will you be in SE Asia for? Are you not returning to Germany? You have so many great photos on your blog that I need to view a post a day. You’re a photographer from way back :) You’ve traveled to so many countries – is this all in order or over a longer period of time?
I love the story of how your husband proposed at this bench – there is so much history around it, and you are both a part of that! :)

We’re planning on being in SE Asia through the beginning of March, and then, we’re not sure where we’ll relocate! We loved life in Europe, but will see where our next life path leads.

I wish I’d started a blog before 2011! I was fortunate to travel a bit to Europe with my parents, growing up, but my true travel bug thirst wasn’t quenched until I moved to Germany in 2001. I was fortunate to make it to most of western and central Europe, and a bit of North Africa, but would like to explore more of eastern Europe now. Also, South America and Australia await!

Your comment about us becoming part of the castle garden’s history makes me smile. :-) We had our winter/ceremonial wedding not far from the bench, in that castle’s chapel. In fact, that one year anniversary is approaching on the 17th of this month!

Hope your week’s been going well, and I look forward to seeing more of your NY photography soon.

You two are living the dream – traveling around the world! I posted recently so there are plenty of pics up on my blog!! The 17th is tomorrow (my time). is it not 17th your time?

Gosh, I’ve lost track of days and dates since I haven’t been at work, but the anniversary is tomorrow, I’m certain of it! We’re still at Friday the 16th here :) I’m off to enjoy your photography now!

Thank you, Kavita. This bench is indeed a special and romantic spot in Heidelberg, with lots of memories – of a proposal, of picnics and of pondering sessions. :)
