Photo du Jour: Pedaling the Backroads of Vietnam’s Ben Tre Province

Two cyclists walk their bikes through a natural area in Vietnam's Ben Tre province.

On a Sunday afternoon on which many celebrated the first day of the western New Year, these two Vietnamese ladies pedaled the lush, green backroads of Vietnam’s Ben Tre Province. Ben Tre is situated in the Mekong Delta.

Tricia has learned that travel’s greatest gift is not sightseeing, rather it is the interactions with people. Some of her most memorable experiences have been sharing a bottle of champagne with distant French cousins in Lorraine, learning how to milk goats in a sleepy Bulgarian village, and ringing in the Vietnamese New Year with a Hanoi family. She welcomes any opportunity to practice French and German, and she loves delving into a place’s history and artisanal food scene. A former education administrator and training specialist, Tricia has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in international relations. She and her husband, Shawn, married in the ruins of a snowy German castle. They’ve been known to escape winter by basing themselves in coastal Croatia or Southeast Asia. Though they are currently nomadic, they look forward to establishing a European home someday. Her writing has appeared in Fodor’s Travel, Frommer’s, and International Living.

  1. Beautiful! Looks like a lovely part of the country, I can’t wait to explore it! Where are you guys at the moment, still Vietnam? I have loved all your images and words, it has whet my appetite for our SE Asian adventure. Hope you’re well :)

    1. Hi Sarah, glad to keep you inspired through your busy days! Do you have a countdown going?!

We just crossed into Laos from Vietnam yesterday. It’s Shawn’s first time here, my second, but we’re exploring new territory, and a semi-remote area (Phonsavan & the soon-to-be UNESCO World Heritage Site registered Plain of Jars). So glad you enjoy the posts – it’s encouragement like yours that keeps me writing – even when days are busy and fun-packed!

It’s Chinese New Year tonight and the firecrackers are going! Happy New Year of the Dragon and happy travels to you soon!
