An image of a grumpy baby adorns the wall of a bakery in Oberammergau, Germany, enticing customers with the establishment’s promise of a tasty cup of joe. The poster reads: “Still tired? Here, you’ll find really good coffee.”
A happy Monday to all!
Where in the World?
Planning Pointers:
- The town of Oberammergau is located about 90 km southwest of Munich. To get there by rail or by bus, research the Bayern or Regio Ticket (website in German, but you can use Google Translate). These special tickets start at €20/25 for one passenger, and cost €6 for each additional passenger. You can use them to travel via bus and train throughout much of the region, making them a better deal if you want to make a few stops in a day. You can purchase tickets online, via a ticket machine, or in person.
- Are you looking for a guesthouse or hotel in Oberammergau? Before my parents moved there, Shawn and I spent two nights at the Gästehaus Hildegard (affiliate link). We thought the beds were comfortable, the owners were helpful and kind, and the breakfast was tasty. The guest house is centrally located in the town too, and it’s not far from the Tiroler Gasse bus stop. The train station is also only about 1 km away.
- The following link contains an index of all my posts from Germany, including visits to Neuschwanstein Castle and Schloss Linderhof. If you’re feeling adventurous while in Oberammergau, also consider climbing up to the top of Mount Kofel. And, art & culture lovers will likely enjoy a stop at the Pilatushaus, where artisans sometimes demonstrate their wares being made.

That’s hilarious!
How can one resist with such great advertising? We sent this bakery streetscape to our friends, who are new parents and probably needing some coffee to get through sleepy days. :)
Good humor always gets the best results! Walking and looking for funny things in life is my favorite way to photograph, as it is spontaneous.
Marilyn, that’s a refreshing philosophy for travel too. You never know what delightful tidbits you’ll find, or special characters you’ll meet.
Coffee sounds great. Don’t care for grumpy babies though. :-)
Thankfully my husband isn’t too much of a grumpy baby before his morning dose of java. :)
I can relate. There are rumors that I can occasionally be less then pleasant in the morning before my coffee infusion. But they are of course only rumors. :-)
Thanks to my reader, Fotoeins, I just learned a new German word that might describe your rumored self, if ever in a foul morning mood – ‘Stinksauer.’ :)
I’m lucky I never have that Monday feeling, Thanks Tricia.
What’s your secret, Mark?
Well my start of work day could be any day, and I’m normally pretty excited to be going.
That is very funny, oh by the way, I have been in this bakery!!!
That doesn’t surprise me since Oberammergau is such a small spot! I’m constantly amazed by how we bump into the same people here in a given day. Everyone knows everyone – just like a sitcom.
That is a clever way to entice customers. By the look of the snow you might need a good hot coffee.
Indeed! Our house has been ever a flowin’ with hot tea and coffee this winter.
My German side/voice immediately went: Gibt’s auch Stinkcaffee? Ich bin doch schon wach! (Is there also stinky coffee? I’m awake! I’m awake!)
Great photo catch! :-)
Thank you, Fotoeins. I must confess, I don’t get the reference to stinky coffee. That’s likely because I’m out of touch with American or German pop culture. :) Please elaborate!
The look on the baby’s face can be described in German as “Stinksauer”. The adjective can also be applied to someone in a foul mood, and one can describe them as being “stinksauer”. That brought me to what I wrote above: can a special kind of coffee put one in a foul mood? :)
Ah, now I get it. :) Thank you for teaching me a new German word for the day!
Very, very cute!!
:)
I think I need this picture on a mug. The baby is much cuter than I am in the morning before I’ve had my fill of coffee.
My husband is also a coffee enthusiast, but a bit happier than this baby pre-java. :)
That’s clever :-D
Cute and funny!
A smile to get the new week started. :)
